Johnson Getting Early Looks From Big 12
Now 3-0 on the year, the Friendswood (TX) football team is proving that they are one of the hot teams in the Houston area. With that said, there is a load of talent on this squad that makes this team what it is. When the Mustangs look to move the ball on the ground, it is likely that junior running back Johnathan Johnson will get the call. In the Week 2 win over Stratford, Johnson played a big role in the Mustangs' win. "It felt great. These guys (Stratford) came down from (Class) 5A and there was a lot of hype in this game. Our coach told us this would be a tough game and the we needed to bounce back from that close game (35-34) against West Orange-Stark," Johnson said. "I'm glad we came out with the victory in this one." The final score was 24-14 in favor of Friendswood and the 5-foot-9, 170-pound had close to 150 yards of offensive production. Though he was not able to get into the end zone, his yards were key to setting up quite a few of the points on the board. Friendswood finished the game with 296 yards, but none came easy. Johnson spoke on some of the things the team dealt with during the contest. "The first half it was a little frustrating because we weren't moving the ball much, but we drew some plays up at halftime," Johnson said. "We came out in the second half and we could move the ball better. Then I felt a lot more comfortable then." Indeed, it was the second half when Friendswood began to flex a little muscle. This was done despite the fact that the Mustangs had a couple of players missing off of the offensive line. "We had a couple of players out because they got hurt and we have a bunch of first-timers on the field, but they are playing really good," Johnson said. While on the discussion of playing good, Johnson apparently has not done badly for himself as well. After a successful sophomore season, Johnson has started seeing some movement in his recruitment. "I am talking with Texas A&M currently and I am also in contact with Oklahoma State," Johnson said. For now, he said that there are no verbal offers on the table and it seems like most of his love is coming from the Big 12 Conference. So naturally, his top schools (for now) all come from the same conference. He has a couple of trips lined up as well. "I went to an A&M game already and I plan to go back. I will likely catch an Oklahoma State game and a Texas Tech game," Johnson said. "You could say that those three are on my early list."
