Van der Wal's Process
Dillon van der Wal, the 6-foot-7, 240-pound four-star tight end/defensive end from Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif., will be taking his second official visit this weekend (Oct. 29) when he visits Arizona State. "I've always liked Arizona State," Van der Wal said. "I've been there about six or seven times already and I love it there. My dad went there so I know a lot about them, plus I've got some friends there. I'm pretty comfortable there." The Sun Devils are recruiting him as a defensive end. "They lost a tough one to Oregon and every week it seems like they're in a war," he said. "They're getting close though. I think they'll be fine. They're only a couple of big recruits away from turning it around." Van der Wal's first official visit was to Minnesota on Sept. 18 when they took on USC. "It was awesome," he said about his visit. "I loved it. I loved the coaches and it's too bad about coach ‘Brew' (former Gophers coach Tim Brewster was recently fired). They're having a tough time right now. It's too bad. I've talked with (co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs) coach Ronnie Lee and (defensive line) coach Tim Cross and they said they're both on the edge of their seat trying to figure out what's gonna happen." The Gophers are recruiting him for both defensive end and tight end. "It's still a good program," he said. "They're young and working hard to get better. Plus, they're giving me an opportunity to play basketball too." Van der Wal, ranked as the No. 12 tight end in the country by Scout.com, and likes Arizona State and Minnesota along with Nebraska, North Carolina, Arkansas and Dartmouth, but of those only the Sun Devils and Gophers have offered. He says he also has offers from San Diego State, Baylor, Duke and New Mexico State. "North Carolina seems close (to offering)," he said. "They've been talking to my coaches a lot and we just sent them some film last week. They said they'd evaluate it and get back to me this week. "Arkansas got my film too and are checking it out," he said. "Most of the schools wanted to see several games from this season and that's why we've been sending stuff out now." Another school that van der Wal hopes will come through with an offer is UCLA. "I'm a momma's boy and if UCLA offered I'd definitely consider it," he said. "I've been hearing from them a bit and my coaches have talked with them and sent them some film too." Oaks Christian is 5-2 with Van der Wal getting 50 tackles and seven sacks on defense. He's also caught four balls for around 50 yards. He reports a 3.0 GPA and a 24 ACT.
