Holtz Likes Big Ten Football
Glenshaw (Pa.) Shaler junior tight end J.P. Holtz had the makings of an impressive junior season going scoring 13 touchdowns in just six games. Holtz then fractured his ankle against Seneca Valley and was lost for the season. Holtz isn't going to sit and dwell on the injury. He is now taking the time to take a few unofficial trips. Most recently, Holtz ventured to Penn State on Saturday night. "I went to Penn State on Saturday with my dad and a friend," Holtz said. "It was a great time, Penn State treats recruits very well. It was a great environment and the stadium was packed. "I'm being recruited as a tight end/defensive end and I really like how Penn State uses their tight end," Holtz continued."The tight end will line up in the slot and do different things." Holtz is being recruited by Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. "Coach Bradley seems to like me a lot," explained Holtz. "I went out there for camp this summer. They don't offer many people early, so we'll see what happens. I like Big Ten football a lot and I like Penn State a lot." Holtz has also been hearing from Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Wisconsin and North Carolina State. The talented junior has also visited nearby Pittsburgh for a few of the Panthers home games. "Pitt is a lot different than Penn State," Holtz explained when comparing the two. "The fans aren't the same at an off-campus stadium. I probably need to learn more about them, but they haven't been recruiting me as hard as some of the other schools." Holtz is taking his time and figuring out what is important to him when picking a school. He is also in the process of lining up a few more unofficial trips. "I want to see what all the schools are really about." stated Holtz. "I want to see how I will fit it. I want to see how they play as a team and what kind of schemes they use. I hope to visit North Carolina State, Cincinnati and West Virginia in the next few weeks.
