All but three members of this year’s talented Alabama roster will be in action when AHSAA first-round playoff action takes place throughout the state on Nov. 5.
"The best players usually make up the best teams, but it’s still somewhat surprising that almost the entire Alabama roster will have the opportunity to participate in playoff action this year,” said All-Star Classic Executive Director Vic Knight. "This is such an exciting time for high school football in the state, as well as in the careers of these outstanding young athletes who will be displaying their talents in Mobile on December 11."
Both of the game’s marquee quarterbacks will be in action on Friday. Jacob Coker, a Florida State commitment and one of 14 players from southwest Alabama on this year’s roster, will lead his eighth-ranked St. Paul’s Saints in a first-round matchup against Charles Henderson, while Athens’ Stephen Rivers, a LSU commitment, will direct his Golden Eagles against Boaz.
Most of the All-Star Classic’s players who will compete for a state title come from the 5A and 6A powers in both states. Defending state champion and number one ranked Hoover, which will face Gardendale in round one, has two players in the game – wide receiver/tight end Jaylon Denson, an Auburn commitment, and offensive lineman Brandon Morgan.
Davidson High School, 9-1 on the season and ranked third in 6A, will open against McGill-Toolen and also has two players in the game – defensive linemen JaBrian Niles and Denzell Perine. Niles is committed to Auburn.
In 5A, Briarwood Christian, Walker and Russellville, ranked 2nd, 3rd, 4th. respectively, in the final ASWA poll of the regular season, have a total of four players in the game, including Russellville linebacker Brent Calloway, an Alabama commitment. Veteran Briarwood Christian head coach Fred Yancey is serving as Team Alabama’s head coach, and is going after the fourth state title of his career.
A total of 20 Team Alabama players have already committed to play at major colleges next year, 13 of them in the SEC.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association’s playoffs begin on November 12, with the first-round brackets to be determined after this week’s final regular season games. Most of the members of the Team Mississippi squad are expected to be in action in those first-round games, as well.
The All-Star Classic is set for Saturday, December 11, at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium. For more information, visit www.almsclassic.com
