Nicholson Noticed for Excellence
Four-star prospect Demetrious Nicholson from Bayside High (Virginia Beach, Va.) is the full package. Nicholson the athlete is one of the most recruited defensive backs in the state of Virginia and helped lead the Marlins to their first Group AAA State Semifinal since 1992. Nicholson the student carries a 3.51 GPA and is an active member of the Bayside Minority Achievement Club. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound cornerback and wide receiver recently received recognition for his excellence both on and off the field. He has been named the Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year, and is a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year, which will be announced mid-December. "I don't think they could have chosen a more deserving kid," said Bayside Head Coach Darnell Moore. He is just a great student athlete, and he is a good citizen. I could hear the teachers say to reporters and such that this is the kid they would most want their kid to be like." "He wrote me a card Monday and he told me he appreciated the season and letting him live up to the skill level that he had. And he took all the things I said to heart. And he put in his card, tell your wife, thanks for her advice, too." Last year's Gatorade Virginia recipient was Oscar Smith's (Chesapeake, Va.) Phillip Sims who is now at Alabama. Previous national recipients include Mark Sanchez, Wes Welker, Jerome Bettis, Terrell Suggs and Anquan Boldin. As receiver, Nicholson had 37 receptions for 523 yards and eight touchdowns, and on defense he racked up 35 tackles (10 for a loss), two interceptions and 19 pass breakups. He also returned two punts for touchdowns and has blocked three kicks. Recruiting has been on the back-burner for the four-star until now. With his season over, we can certainly anticipate a decision to come soon. His top schools remain North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson and Stanford. "I want to go see UNC and Clemson even though I have been there one time before on an unofficial visit but I want to go there on an official visit. But if not, I am planning on making my decision after the season is over," he said prior to State Semis. Scout.com will follow Nicholson throughout his college commitment process.
