I had the chance to speak with Sam Collura today regarding his conversation with new Pitt head coach…
Collura waits to hear from Haywood
Sam Collura, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end from DeMatha High (Hyattsville, MD) committed to Pittsburgh in February. Collura, like many commits, was left in limbo regarding his scholarship offer to play for the Panthers after Dave Wannstedt ‘s recent resignation. Mike Haywood is taking over at Pitt after leading Miami (OH) to the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship. "When I found out he stepped down it was a crazy day. I built a relationship with Wannstedt. Coach Wannstedt was a big part of why I committed." Thankfully for Collura and many other Panther commits, Haywood will honor "all commitments and scholarships," he said. "That was my primary concern. That was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders because I committed way back in February and a lot of schools got in contact again when they heard the coach was stepping down and of the uncertainty with the program." Boston College and Virginia Tech made contact with Collura recently. The Eagles; however, are no longer being considered by Collura. He is still waiting for an offer from the Hokies. "Right now Boston College, they are out of the picture now and Virginia Tech, I haven't really gotten anything. They asked for a copy of my junior tape and they are going to take a look at me. I was just thinking that because of the uncertainty with the coaching position it always makes sense to have something as a backup." Collura plans to have a conversation with Haywood this weekend. He remains a Pittsburgh commit for the time being but is entertaining other offers. "As of right now, I don't know because I haven't had a chance to talk to coach Haywood yet to see what type of guy he is. As of right now, I am Pittsburgh."
