A Quick Look at QB Brewer
For those present at the Class 4A Division II state championship game between Lake Travis and Denton Ryan, it was obvious that the Lake Travis has been here before and knows what it is doing. And rightfully so. He Cavaliers walked away from Dallas Cowboys Stadium Saturday afternoon with a 27-7 victory. This win marks the Cavaliers fourth consecutive state title. Leading the charge for the Lake Travis team was quarterback Michael Brewer. The Scout.com three-star athlete was effective through the air and ground and accounted for 2/3 of the Lake Travis scores. Brewer, whose future play will be in Lubbock next season for Texas Tech, was 14-of-22 for 211 yards. On the ground he added another 88 yards and two touchdowns. For many years, Texas Tech has targeted guys who have solid resumes in offenses that rely heavily on the pass. And with Brewer, he clearly fits into that category. "Brewer is a guy who will be most effective in a spread offense. So as long as they stick to the spread offense then he will be just fine," Midlands Regional Manager Greg Powers said. "He is smart enough to pick up on the intricacies of the game and that should be a huge asset as he adjusts to a huge college play book." Brewer is a player who needs the ball in his hands and proves time and time again to be effective, based on the situation in the game. If the team needs to get into a quick strike situation or needs to control the clock, Brewer knows the deal and can handle the situation. "Brewer is a very intelligent quarterback who will sit in the pocket and pick defenses apart. He finds the open receiver quickly and hits him in stride," Powers said. "He has some good pop in his arm and can throw all three passes: short, intermediate and deep." And that should serve him well once in Lubbock.
