2012 Preview: Elliot Faerber
The Shawnee (KS) MIssion East Lancers are not what one might describe as a traditional football power in the Kansas City area. Typically taking a backseat to Sunflower League rivals like Shawnee (KS) Mission West and Olathe (KS) North, the Lancers shrugged off the mantle of the also-ran in 2010 and shocked everyone – going 8-2 for the first time in school history, taking second in the league and making the Kansas Class 6A state playoffs. One of the primary contributors to that success was junior wide receiver Elliot Faerber, an athlete whose season closely mirrored that of his team. "I did a lot better than I expected," Faerber said. "As a sophomore I bounced back between JV and varsity. I knew what I was capable of, and I'm really excited by how the year went because I think it's a good reflection of what I can do." In 2010, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound receiver hauled in 43 passes for a rejuvenated Lancers offense, good for 799 yards and six touchdowns; all of which earned him a first team All-Sunflower League selection and honorable mention Kansas Class 6A selection from both the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capitol-Journal. With his junior film making the rounds, schools are now beginning to show interest. "I've gotten a couple of letters," Faerber said. "I visited Northwestern and Nebraska. I got a letter from Rice." Location won't play a factor in his recruitment, as the junior standout explained it's more about finding his comfort level with a school. With receiving tight ends all the rage in the college game right now, Faerber said he wouldn't be adverse to packing on additional weight and making a position switch either – though he does see himself as more of a pure receiver. "I know I could put on the weight for a tight end and I wouldn't be opposed to doing it," he said. "I do think I'm more of a receiver though. I feel like my speed is a little bit better than a tight end's."
