Chesapeake Bowl Bling

Wednesday was the last day of preparation before the Chesapeake Bowl, but was also a day to honor the players selected for the game and also bring their parents and coaches into the fold for the Banquet and Ring Ceremony and the day went off with a bang.

When North Head Coach Terry Smith spoke to his team and their parents tonight he spoke from a position of experience having been a head coach at the U.S. Army All-American Game and while the Chesapeake Bowl may not bring some things to the table that prestigious event can, he was sure to point out that the way players were treated this week was something he has never seen.

That has pretty much been the common theme at the Towson University Marriott Conference Hotel this week as the players and coaches have been treated to keynote speakers, game rooms, free jerseys, beautiful bowl rings, great food and outstanding hotel accommodations. Parents and players alike have been in awe of their experience, especially given that this is a regional bowl game.

Tonight Smith had the duty of handing out rings to his North players with Bishop McDevitt quarterback Matt Johnson being the first and Wyoming Area defensive tackle Julian Campenni being the last and then the entire room broke into the lounge area where they were swarmed with family and friends which was a great occasion. The same was true for South coach Biff Poggi who went through players like Kevin McReynolds, Garrett Dolly, Marco Jones and the rest of his outstanding squad before the parents could enjoy the moment with their sons. It was truly a great moment.

As for football, it looks like Lafayette Pitts and Maika Polamalu will be starring the in backfield for the North and while Patrick Skov in the No. 4 fullback in the country, he will be lining up at middle linebacker as he has blown it up in practices. Clairton defensive end Desimon Green also played quarterback in high school and might get on the field at wide receiver as well for the North side.

After a long talk with the South coaches today, they dove deep into their playbook with me and told me they’ll be running the famed A-11 offense, which is illegal, so no more secrets are coming out about the North team in this article. They’re a secretive bunch and the atmosphere before the game has been borderline hilarious given the spirit of North vs. South, especially with a “North” reporter covering the game. It’s all in good fun.

Savon Huggins will be attending the game with his coach tomorrow though, so maybe the North coaches have some tricks up their sleeves as well with a ringer.
