Kennard Backman has made his decision and he has committed to the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers…
Something You Didn't Know?
Kennard Backman, the 6-foot-3, 218-pound three star tight end from Whitefield Academy in Mableton, Ga., will be taking his first official visit this weekend (Jan. 7) to UAB. "I've talked to all their coaches and get along with them pretty well," Backman said. "They're great people and very up front and honest with me." Backman says he also likes UAB's offense. "They like how I'm very versatile," he said. "They said I wouldn't just play with my hand on the ground and said I'd be used as a catching tight end too." Backman, ranked as the No. 52 tight end in the country by Scout.com, now favors UAB and Western Carolina solidly over Air Force and Middle Tennessee. The Blazers and the Catamounts* are his only offers. Air Force and Middle Tennessee State have not offered, but are recruiting him. "They're looking at my senior tape now," he said. "I think they're really close to offering." On Jan. 14, Backman will be officially visiting Western Carolina. "They were the first ones to offer me," he said. "They have believed in me since the beginning. They've really tried to get to know me as a person and even recruited me for basketball." Backman says he does not have a timeframe for a decision. "I'll see if I get more (offers)," he said. "I've talked to guys who went to school on sports scholarships and they told me to wait for that gut feeling. I'm hoping to have that." Other than a gut feeling, Backman says he's looking for a "total atmosphere." "I just want to be able to see myself being there," he said. Backman plans to major in business and reports a 3.3 core GPA and a 1470 SAT and 22 ACT. *A catamount is a wildcat, like a bobcat, cougar and lynx, from the southern Appalachian mountain region.
