The first camp was in Miami on Saturday and the second was in Gainesville on Sunday. If I were to put together what might be a list of the top 25 prospects in the entire state, close to 20 of them attended one of the two events. They, along with several other kids that became better football players over the last couple days, made this year's tour through Florida very successful with two very competitive camps.
Lake Mary standout Keith Rivers took home MVP honors at the Miami Camp after an outstanding performance. With a 4.56/40-time, a 34-inch vertical jump, and an excellent day in drills, Rivers proved why he'll be among the state's elite prospects this season. "I came to learn some things and see the competition and I'm real happy," Rivers said.
Miami (Carol City) linebacker Willie Williams also had a dominating performance. Considered by some to be the state's top overall prospect, Williams was equally impressive as Rivers all afternoon.
Miami (Killian) standout running back Bobby Washington attended the camp for the second year in a row. At 6-0 1/2 and 198 pounds, Washington displayed tremendous quickness (including a 4.03 shuttle run). He'll be among the nation's premier running back prospects this year. "It went real well," he said. "Those camps give you a chance to learn some things and go up against the best at the same time."
The group of linebackers on Saturday was incredible. In addition to Rivers and Williams, there were several other players that will be ready to make an impact this season. South Miami's Javier Estopinan, Edison's Bruce Mompremier, and Tampa Bay Tech's Maurice Crum Jr. are among those who proved why they're considered big time prospects.
Sunday proved to be the day of the quarterback. Three of the nation's best -- Seabreeze's Xavier Lee, Land O Lakes's Drew Weatherford, and Hawthorne's Cornelius Ingram -- put their skills on display. All three were outstanding.
"It was great being out there with Cornelius and Xavier," Weatherford said. "They're both great players and I'm glad I was able to throw with them today."
Offensive lineman Jim Tartt of Wakulla proved why he'll be among the nation's top offensive line prospects. At 6-4 and 310, Tartt dominated all afternoon.
Orlando (Evans) standout linebacker Brandon Siler is coming off an incredible junior season and he followed that up with an outstanding performance today. At 6-2 and 206, Siler ran a 4.59/40, jumped 31 inches, and proved why he's right there with Rivers and Williams as three of the best linebacker prospects in the entire country. "I'm glad I came out here," Siler said. "I liked it out here and I had fun."
