The 5' 10", 175-pound cornerback out of Clinton is starting to turn some heads on the D1 level as…
Catching up with Cedric Jiles
"I feel like I can come up and make the big hit ," added Cedric Jiles when asked about his strengths as a defensive back. "If they go up to make a catch against me, I knock them down real hard. After a while they do not want to make a catch against me because I wear them down." Giles has an area he would still like to improve on. "I want to keep my eyes on the receiver and not the quarterback because sometimes you lose your target. You get lost and the quarterback gets it to him so I am trying to just focus on my receiver and not the quarterback." Giles' junior season saw him collect 30 tackles, 3 interceptions, 6 knockdown passes, and he forced three fumbles. "I watch a lot of Deon Sanders and try to pattern my game after his. I am real light on my feet and ma kea lot of big hits to try and intimidate my guy." A handful of colleges have already taken notice. "I have MSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, USM, and Alabama writing and calling a lot. They are probably coming after me harder than everybody else. UCLA would be in that mix too." The instate colleges look to be closest to offering. "I think Ole Miss or MSU is about to. They are getting real close and are talking real good." What does Jiles know about the Rebels? "I have not been to Ole Miss yet, but I am going up there on April 2nd for their Junior Day. I spoke with Coach (Derrick) Friday. They have a lot of real good Mississippi recruits coming in next fall. I want to play early and that was his main point. He told me that they were short in their numbers at corner back, and I would have a real good chance to play early if I went there. Coach Nix is a real cool coach, and I like their corner back coach as well. I think I am really interested in them." What about MSU? "I went over to State on Saturday (for Junior Day) and it was real nice. I met coaches (Greg) Knox and (Melvin) Smith. Coach Smith is laid back, and they have two corner backs who are graduating. Another one will be a junior this year. They got a couple of young corner backs coming up, but I think I could still play early there. Jonathan Banks played as a freshman, and I like that. I also could have an opportunity to play as a freshman too." What about USM, Alabama, and Tennessee? "I do not know too much about Tennessee and Alabama, but I am going to USM's Jr Day on March 26th. I have not really been talking to those schools as much as MSU and Ole Miss." Who is coming after Jiles the hardest? "I would say MSU because when I talk to them it seems like they really care. When I talk to them or go up there to visit it seems like they are more sincere so far. We shall see because you never know what might happen. I am still wide open."
