In-state Battle Brewing?
Posted Mar 25, 2011
Lawrence Brown, a 6' 5", 230-pound tight end out of New Hope, has already been offered by Ole Miss, but another in-state scholarship could be on the way.
"I think Mississippi State is going to offer me next," said
when asked who which school is closest to offering next. "They are showing me a lot of love right now. They are really trying to get me to come there so I think they will be next."
Interest from both parties picked up after Brown took in the Bulldogs' junior day in March.
"It was pretty good. I like their facilities. I love their facilities. I really like their (coaching) staff. They are showing me a lot of interest right now. I can see myself going there. They really stressed that they needed another tight end. Both of them said that I could play right away."
Lawrence also tripped to Memphis to check out the hometown Tigers.
"I've been talking to Memphis a lot lately. I've gotten pretty close with Coach (Jay) Hopson. We talked for a while when I went up there. Coach Hopson wants me to come play ball for them. I learned a lot about them because I had never been up there before. It looks like they are starting to do a lot of new things to try and get it turned around up there. Coach (Larry) Porter is a real down-to-earth guy and a great coach. I would like to play for him. I could see myself playing up there. I like their coaches a lot."
The spring visits have not stopped at those two campuses, however.
"I went down to Alabama, too. I was impressed. I like the way they handle their business and it's a top line school. They play hard-nosed football and expect the best out of you. They just prepare you for the next level."
Where will Brown visit next?
"I'm going to Ole Miss on April 3, and back to MSU and Alabama to see them practice."
What does he hope to learn about Ole Miss during his trip?
"I just want to see more of everything. I've been there a couple of times before, but it was for football games. I want to get to know their staff a little bit more. I like how they play their players early, though. I notice they play a lot of young guys. That's a big plus for me. I think it's a good fit for me up there. I like their offense a lot. I just need to get to know their coaches better."
Which coaches does the New Hope product keep in regular contact with?
"I keep in touch a little bit with a MSU coach. I can't think of his name but we talk some. But mostly I keep in touch with coach (Jay) Hopson (at Memphis). I've started to keep in touch with the Alabama coaches, too."
Brown just finished his basketball season where he averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game. Now it's back to football spring training.
"We get cranked up in late April. I'm just hoping to become a team leader that makes the big plays. I just want to show people what I can do and play every play like it's my last. That's the thing I want to most accomplish this year."
