Cal State Game Director Curtis Allen and Game Operations Coordinator Derek Burrell added three more players to California North versus South two-game all-star event that will be played Dec. 23 at Veterans Stadium in Clovis.
“It’s a good honor to be here, Coach Burrell invited me a few months ago,” said Tulare (Calif.) linebacker Xavier Stephens, who received his official invite on Friday at the Selection Tour Skills and Drills Camp.
Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial offensive tackle David Keller and Fresno (Calif.) Bullard tight end Ian Taubler also accepted invites in Fresno. “It’s an honor,” Taubler said of the invite.
“It feels good,” added Keller. “I want to show I can compete with the best and be the best.”
The trio joined five other Fresno-area players already with Cal State Game invites. Childhood friends Tee Shepard and Deontay Greenberry, out of Fresno Central and Fresno Washington Union, respectively, along with Fresno Central quarterback Mike Baker, Fresno Bullard offensive guard Stephon McCray, and Fresno San Joaquin Memorial running back Chris Brown received invites to the game in January. All attended Friday save Brown, who had a previous engagement.
Besides the three game invites, the Cal State Game issued Five-Star Camp invites to Titus Garrett and Shannon Edwards, out of San Joaquin Memorial and Bakersfield (Calif.) Ridgeview, respectively. The two defensive backs/athletes were impressive on Friday in 1-on-1s and 7-on-7 action.
The Five-Star Camp will be held in July at Ventura College. The Five-Star Camp is the Cal State Game’s exclusive invite only camp that will feature all the players that received game invites and another 50-100 top prospects. The camp will determine which players will get the remaining invites to the game and which will play in the Five-Star Game or Rising Stars Game.
Besides the two all-star games, the Cal State Game will also feature an Underclassmen Showcase Camp that will run simultaneously with the Cal State Game festivities in December. Three players received invites to the Underclassmen Showcase on Friday – Fresno Central quarterback Khari McGee and San Joaquin Memorial teammates cornerback Johnny Johnson and defensive lineman Jaylen Ruiz.
More players that competed Friday as well as Sunday in Cerritos could receive invites to the Five-Star Camp and Underclassmen Showcase after Selection Tour coaches continue to review camp notes, rate prospects, and confer with Allen and Burrell.
Allen says invites will continue throughout the Selection Tour process until the start of the Five-Star Camp. The Selection Tour continues Sunday May 1 in Santa Clarita at the College of the Canyons.
