Former Pittsburgh (Pa.) Penn Hills four-star cornerback Cullen Christian asked the Michigan coaching staff for his release last week, so he could transfer. The release was granted and Christian only asked to be released to one school.
"I'm coming home and I am going to be a Pittsburgh Panther," Christian said. "Pittsburgh got my release and all that is left for me to do is to give them my transcripts and fill out paperwork. I'm leaving here on Tuesday after finals, so I might stop down this week, but I am supposed to go down May 9th and meet with the staff and do all the paperwork."
The true sophomore has gone through a myriad of feelings over the past few weeks.
"I was very mad at first," explained Christian. "I never wanted to be the type of guy who quit something he started or transferred. I came her to be a part of something special, but I don't fit what they want.
"It feels real good to get a fresh start," Christian continued. "I'm just happy to be coming home. Coach (Tony) Gibson is at Pitt and he was the main reason why I chose Michigan. I just feel like I will enjoy it being home. I wasn't enjoying myself here at Michigan."
After Pittsburgh received his official release, Christian got to speak with his former coach Tony Gibson.
"He was pretty excited," Christian stated. "he told me to hurry up and get down here so we can get this done. He said everyone is excited to have me."
Christian also thought about possibly looking into West Virginia.
"I was thinking about WVU," he said when asked about what other schools he considered. "I wanted to be closer to home and being back with Coach Gibby is too much to pass up. I know what he expects from his players and I know how he coaches. I am also familiar with Tony Dews and Calvin Magee."
Christian is also being reunited with three former Penn Hills Indians Aaron Donald, Brandon Ifill and Dan Mason.
"I have talked to Brandon a lot about all this stuff and he has been a true friend always telling me to keep my head up," Christian stated. "He always tells me I'll work my way through it. I haven't spoken much with Aaron about it all. Ray Vinopal is coming to Pitt and me and him are boys up here. We have spoken a lot about all of this. I know so many of the guys at Pitt, even besides the Penn Hills players I know Drew Carswell and Kevin Weatherspoon and all kinds of guys, so there is a nice comfort level for me there.
Christian is a true sophomore and he still has a red shirt that he can use while he sits out a year for the transfer, so he would have three years of eligibility remaining. Depending on the circumstances, he could also petition for a hardship, which would make him eligible to play right away.
