Carmel (Ind.) defensive end Shawn Heffern picks up an in-state offer and his first from a BCS…
Heffern's Growth Increasing Interest
Schools coming to Carmel High in the spring evaluation period have seen a different Shawn Heffern. The 6'6 junior played the season at around 220-lbs and now is up to 240. "I haven't been playing basketball as much right now," he explained. "As soon as basketball was over, I put on 20-lbs pretty quick." He stayed as quick too. Heffern reports he is still running a 4.75 forty, and that his frame and athleticism has schools talking about playing him all over the field from offensive tackle to tight end and from linebacker to defensive end. Central Michigan is not sure where they will play him. The Chippewas just know they want Heffern in Mount Pleasant and extended a scholarship offer this week. "They offered Monday. That was my first offer. It was a big relief and I'm looking forward to getting the chance to play college football." Seeing the campus, as he has several other schools, is a priority for Heffern. "I haven't had a chance to visit [Central Michigan] yet. I visited Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue and I was going to visit Michigan State, but it got canceled. It got rained out, but I'm planning on going up to CMU pretty soon. Their coach is coming down Monday and I'll talk to him more in-depth about coming up." Another offer could come as soon as today, and more could follow, as schools are becoming more and more interested. "Toledo said they're probably going to offer me this week. That was before I got the CMU offer, so I'm expecting an offer pretty soon. Indiana and Purdue said they're close. A lot of schools said they're close. Northwestern wants me to come to campus so I can check them out." On his visit to South Bend, Heffern says he got to find out where he stands with Notre Dame as well. "They want me to come up to camp; their elite camp. They're recruiting me as an outside linebacker."
