BOTHELL, Wash. - There weren't a ton of tight ends working out at the Barton Football 2011…
Smith Lands First Offer
Kent (Wash.) Kentridge tight end Caleb Smith was offered by Idaho this past week. "I was at home and I got a call from Coach (Robb) Akey," said Smith. "He said that they had watched my film and that they like me as a big tight end and wanted to offer me a full ride scholarship." Smith is a 6'5" 225lbs junior that made the transition from quarterback to tight end this past season and will only get better as he get more used to playing the position. Smith said that the Idaho offer was a surprise and talked about learning more about the program. "It is a pretty new school for me, I don't know too much about them," said Smith. "My teammate Cameron McKernan is headed there so he talks about them; I definitely plan on taking a visit." Idaho isn't the only school talking to Smith, he mentioned some other programs that have been in contact recently. "I am also hearing from Washington State, Oregon and Boise State," said Smith. "Those are the ones that I am hearing from the most and that I think could offer soon." Smith is hoping that more schools pull the trigger and will likely wait a while before he makes his final decision. "Idaho didn't put any pressure on me to make a commitment," said Smith. "I want to take my time and weigh all of my options before I make a decision." Smith was excited to have his first offer in hand and know that he will be playing college football in the fall of 2012. "It is a totally different feeling than I had a week ago," said Smith. "When I heard him say they wanted to offer me a full ride scholarship it was my dreams being realized in seconds. Smith has kept himself busy this spring, he competed in the Badger Elite 7on7 passing tournament in Las Vegas and also works out weekly with the Barton Football Academy. This past weekend he ran a 4.72 40-yard dash at the Barton Combine. The junior isn't slowing down anytime soon, he will keep going with an intense summer schedule. "I will be at the Nike Oregon and Nike Washington camps," said Smith. "Then team camps with Boise State, Utah, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and Idaho."
