Vernon Butler Recruiting Profile
"I thought I was going to play basketball all of my life, but I decided to come back out for football last season," Vernon Butler stated. "I guess I made a good decision." Butler's presence on the gridiron was felt immediately as he turned in 98 tackles and 4 sacks while helping North Pike to the Class 4A State Championship game. "I was a little rusty at first. I hadn't really played since my 8th grade season, but it went better than I expected. We finished first in district, won the south state tile, and made it to the championship game. I got a lot stronger which helped my bull rush out a lot. I can swim too and stop the run. Stopping the run is what I do best, but I make a lot of plays from behind the line of scrimmage too." Vernon teams up with A.J. Jefferson to form arguably the top defensive end tandem in the state of Mississippi. "A.J. is a good athlete. He makes plays. He usually gets everything started and gets them coming to my side. I do the same thing for him. Then they have to go up the middle. We just have fun out there and try to one up each other in a good competitive way." The 4A All-State selection has some lofty goals for his senior season. "We want to bring home the trophy this year, and I would like to get over 150 tackles and 12 sacks." Several colleges have stopped by North Pike to scout Butler this spring "I have seen MSU, Ole Miss, USM, Alcorn, N' Western LA, Troy, and LSU." Any spring visits for Vernon? "I went to MSU and the environment was good. The staff was real good. They sounded nice. It was an overall nice trip. That's the only place I have been so far, but I want to visit LSU and go visit Ole Miss. Those are the main schools right now." What makes LSU attractive? "They said they were going to be recruiting me and A.J. this upcoming season. I like their school. It is a big school, and they have a good football program." The Rebels have picked up their recruiting intensity as of late. "They are a good school too. Coach David Lee came by and scouted us. He said I was a good athlete, and he sees a lot of potential in me. He wants to get me into his school. They are trying to get me there. I like Ole Miss. I have not visited the campus yet, but their coaches sound real good. Me and A.J. are headed up there for their Elite Camp in June." Which school is closest to offering? "I would say MSU or Ole Miss. Those two schools are showing me the most interest right now. Memphis too." What's going on with Memphis? "Coach (Jay) Hopson said I was a good athlete, and he wants to put me into his program one day. He just let me know how hard he is going to be recruiting me from here on out." Decision time is still a long ways off, but he already knows what he is looking for. "I am looking at my relationship with their coaches and do they have a good football program? That's about it, really."
