Mississippi TE adds offers
Posted May 30, 2011
Lawrence Brown, a 6' 5", 230-pound tight end out of Columbus, Miss., has finished his spring training and is now gearing up for the college camps that start this week.
"I am looking forward to working with some of these coaches who have been recruiting me for a while,"
said. "I will be at Ole Miss Saturday, MSU next Tuesday, Memphis on Friday, and Alabama the weekend after next. Those are the ones I can think off the top of my head but there might be others."
Brown has played for a run dominant offense the past few seasons but his senior season that will change.
"We are running a new offense now. It is totally different. We are still doing a lot of running but it is really mixed. We are doing a lot of passing now too. It is more balanced. This year I should still be doing some blocking, but I am going to be going out on some routes and playing more of a primary wide receiver instead of a third option like this past seasons. I will be the first option a lot of times. It should be a good season for me and help me prepare for the college level. I couldn't be anymore excited about my role on next year's team. It's really exciting."
Several colleges scouted him in his role this spring and it was beneficial for Lawrence as he picked up a couple new offers.
"We had a lot of coaches come by. Coach Hopson (for Memphis) came by and they offered me. Coaches (Gunter) Brewer and (James) Shibest came by (from Ole Miss). MSU, La Monroe and Southern Miss came by. UAB also came by and offered me. That was pretty exciting."
What did Coach Hopson say after offering the 3-Star TE?
"He just told me that I am the type of tight end that could come in and play next year. I could go out and block and catch some balls. He just tells me that I am really what he needs. I went up there for a visit and it was nice. I like their food up there in Memphis (laugh). They serve some good BBQ. But mostly, I just love their staff. I love Coach Porter. He is a real nice guy and down to earth. I can get along with Coach Porter and he stresses education over sports. I like that."
What did State say?
"About the same things that they have said in the past. They are still keeping in contact. They just came by the school last week. They are recruiting me real hard and trying to get me down there for their camp next week. I just like their hard nose football they play. It looks like they know what they are doing because they just produced a first round pick (
in the NFL draft). I can come in there and play and just play for a real physical team."
What is going on with Ole Miss?
"They are recruiting me pretty hard. They came by last week and watched some film and spoke to my coaches. They expressed how much they liked me to my coach. . They are just showing me a lot of love. They like me a lot, and I like them a lot. I just love it down there. They give you a good education and it is just right around the corner from my house. I also like how they recruit. They brought in one of the top classes in the country the past two years, and I just think they are a team on the rise. I like how they run their practices too, and I love their fans. I can just see myself playing there."
Which colleges are currently coming after Brown the hardest?
"I would say Ole Miss, Memphis, and (Mississippi) State. Tennessee and Oregon are recruiting me the hardest outside of that group. They are writing me a bunch, and we have been talking lately (on the phone). They just want to get me up there for one of their camps. I am going to do my best to go but I just do not know yet."
