Scouting Report - David Wess (QB)

David Wess - Nike Camp

Ohio's David Wess was just one of several talented signal callers at the Ann Arbor Nike Camp. Here's what we saw when looking at game film of Wess.

Is 2003 the year of the quarterback? It certainly looks like it. From this weekends NFL draft, to this year’s crop of prep gunslingers. The depth at quarterback is as good as its ever been.

Ohio has some very good quarterback prospects to keep an eye on. I like Brian Hoyer (St. Ignatius) and Anthony Turner (Chaminade) a lot. Its no secret my sleeper is Kurt Shoemaker over at Cincinnati (Anderson) but another sleeper to watch closely will be Columbus (Whitehall) signal caller, David Wess.

The quarterback position, without a doubt is the most scrutinized of any position on the football field. Quarterbacks are the leaders, they touch the ball more than anyone on the field and they can make or break coaching careers. Recruit a bad quarterback and you’ll find yourself looking for work.

Coaches can’t afford to make a mistake on a quarterback. That’s why prep quarterbacks have to be dynamite to get an early scholarship offer. College coaches not only want to make sure they are getting a top flight quarterback but they want to interview the individuals to make sure they are mentally tough, physically strong and coachable.

I watched David Wess’s highlight film a couple of times to see if I could find anything that makes him an early offer.

David Wess is an athlete that operated mostly out of the shotgun and he ran the quarterback draw to perfection. He’s very good on the option and his play action is very good.

I felt that David Wess was very good in space, he could make defenders miss and he had decent vision. He lacks straight line speed and burst and that will raise some flags during the May Evaluation period.

David has a good arm but I would have liked to have seen a little more zip on his passes. Especially on the deep out.

Overall, I see a very good athlete that if he has a good senior season, could end up playing Big Ten football.

David Wess is a definite MAC conference quarterback that could make a Bowling Green, Toledo or Marshall very happy.
