Dowrey pledges to PSU, a dream come true
Derek Dowrey, an under-the-radar 6-foot-3, 295-pound defensive tackle out of Handley High in Winchester, Va., pledged his commitment to Penn State after receiving an offer from defensive line coach Larry Johnson at the Senior Camp this weekend. "Coach Johnson said I was good enough to get a scholarship and offered me one and I committed then." For Dowrey, it was a dream come true. "I have liked Penn State a lot. I had other offers but they were the only school that I would have committed to right away." His love for the Lions was sparked by his first visit to Happy Valley last summer. "I went to a camp there and just loved everything about it." With offers from West Virginia, Ohio, East Carolina, Marshall and Richmond, he says he always knew the Lions took precedence over any other program due in large part to his respect for Larry Johnson. "I have liked everything so far, but the biggest reason is coach Johnson. I really liked his coaching style from day one and I always wanted to play for him." "I'm just honored to have a chance to play for them." As for the Nittany Lions, they are getting a two-time Northern Virginia Daily Defensive Player of the Year who collected 145 tackles last season alone.
