Belew Makes the Call
Memphis landed its first commitment of the 2012 recruiting class today when Eric Belew made the call to head coach Larry Porter and the Tigers. "The big thing for me was that Memphis saw my highlight tape and knew they wanted me on the spot," said Belew, a versatile standout from defending state champion Columbia Central. "They told me I can come in and play early. That's what they're talking about. I love their staff. Coach Porter is turning things around and establishing a winning program. His mindset clicks with my mindset." Belew, who projects to play safety for the Tigers, plans to assume a leadership role when it comes to recruiting his future teammates. "I'm definitely going to be helping the coaches with that," he said. "I know several guys that Memphis is looking at, and I know the type of players they want. I'm going to do my best to help bring in those players." When Belew camped at Memphis, he already held an offer from the Tigers, and the on-campus experience apparently sealed the deal. "I wanted to see the coaches in action," said Belew. "I love Coach (Jay) Hopson, who coaches the safeties and is the defensive coordinator. We clicked at the camp, and he made me want to go ahead and commit." How does Belew describe his game and what's the outlook for his senior season? "I'm fascinated by the mental side of football," he said. "Our defensive coordinator lets me call the coverages, and I helped him create the playbook. "I love leadership. I love pressure. My teammates seem to respond well to me and I'm big on chemistry. My focus this offseason is on helping develop team chemistry so we can continue our success. "We lost a lot of seniors, but we'll be very, very fast. Our defensive line might not be big, but they're quick. They say that speed kills in football, and I think that will hold true this year with our team." As a junior, Belew hauled in 41 receptions for almost 750 yards with seven touchdowns. On defense, he picked off five passes.
