Steve Pickren makes decision

Steve Pickren, tight end from Pell City, Ala., flew under the radar until the summer. He started receiving interest and was offered a scholarship this past weekend. Pickren decided to pull the trigger.

"I committed to UAB," said Steve Pickren. "It was really close to home. I like the coaches up there. I like their Engineering program. They have one of the better Engineering programs. Those were the three biggest reasons.

"I committed to UAB on Saturday. I went up there for the camp. They offered me after the camp. It felt great to receive the offer. It was my first offer. UAB was at the top of my list."

Pickren is a standout on the defensive line for Pell City. He was recruited to play offense for the Blazers.

"UAB recruited me to play tight end," he said. "That's where I worked out when I was there. The coaches are real friendly. They worked us pretty hard. Those are the type of coaches I like.

"I haven't played tight end for my school. So far I have pretty good hands. I can't really tell, but I feel like I can block well. I play on the defensive line. I am real physical with my hands.

"I went up there for a camp in June. They wanted me to return and work at tight end. I have been getting extra reps catching the ball. I feel pretty confident catching the ball."
