"I felt like I could really help SMU and be a big impact player my freshman year," said four-star WR Gabriel Marks (Venice HS). "I want to catch a lot of passes and I just can't wait to get to SMU."
Marks is fired up about joining the SMU class and he has plans to make it as good as possible.
"Coach Klemm is a great recruiter and a great coach, and we're going to have one of the best classes you'll ever see if he's able to get all the guys he wants," began Marks. "We'll have Robert Lewis, who I know well, and I hope to persuade Raymond Ford, the corner from Serra, to commit.
"Also, I want to get linebacker Khalil Pettway, who is definitely underrated. I work out with him every Sunday. He's so athletic as a middle linebacker. He's going to be a late bloomer. Darreus Rogers (USC commit) is another player I want to get to SMU. He's electric."
Marks definitely has a vision for the Mustangs.
"We're going to have a talented team at SMU," said Marks. "Coach Klemm and the staff are building something special. Now that I've committed, I think you're going to see some other big names follow suit.
"We plan on SMU taking over and getting back into the Top 25 of college football. I know (Mustangs freshman QB) Conner Preston really well. We're good friends. He's excited about us being a tandem. We're going to score a lot of touchdowns and put SMU on the map in a big way."
Marks grew up rooting for Coach June Jones.
"I've been interested in Coach Jones since I was really little," he said. "I wanted to go to Hawaii for college when Coach Jones was there."
Marks continued his praise, this time directing it at SMU wide receivers coach Jeff Reinebold.
"Coach Reinebold is a great guy. He's so laid-back and 'chill,'" said Marks. "I'd love to pick his brain, because he's so smart. I can't wait to get to SMU and play for him.
"The coaches were ecstatic when I committed, and I'm just happy to be a part of the class. I'm going to work hard."
Marks recently competed in the New Level Athletics/Badger Sport 7-on-7 National Championship, which was held at SMU. Did that final visit solidify his decision to go with the Mustangs?
"No, I had already visited the campus and seen that it was the right place for me," said Marks. "It came down to UCLA, Utah and SMU, and SMU was the best offer for me. I just wanted to wait until the time was right to announce my decision."
And for fans of the Mustangs, the timing couldn't have been any more right.
