FSSW 7v7: Scout Intro – QB Derek Pierce
This could be a breakout year for Marion (TX) quarterback Derek Pierce. Going into his senior season, Pierce will now take the snaps full time after being a back up many years and starting on the defensive side of the ball. "It's going to be a little tough on the transition, but I have a good feeling about it. I have actually been the back up for a couple years now so I have thrown some in games," Pierce said. "So really, it won't be too new for me. We having throwing and catching a lot better than we have before so it feels good. Seven-on-seven has helped us out a lot in connecting with each other." It was a tough day for the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Pierce and the Marion team as they dropped quite a few games. But Pierce said that the team will continue working and that things will get better as they head in to the 2011 season. Even more so, Pierce believes that his game will improve as well. And while the improvements are obviously a working progress, he has already been in contact with several Division I coaches who are showing some serious interest in him. "I'm getting a lot of letters from Nebraska. UTEP and North Texas have sent a bunch of things as well," Pierce said. "That's all I can think of right now. I went to the North Texas camp and I am planning to go the UT-San Antonio camp too. I understand that I am basically going to go into this season and make my resume as I go. I'll get a better feel of where things are after I play a few games this season."
