Detroit Catholic Central added to their strong roster as offensive lineman Derek Edwards transferred from Novi High and is ready to play a big role on a major contender.
The 6'4, 255-lb Edwards is recovering from an injury that happened in May, but he did not show too many signs of rust at Michigan State's camp last week, where he was one of the top performers along the offensive line.
"That was my first thing I did since I came off meniscus surgery a month before," he explained, "so I wasn't 100% there. It was okay. At Catholic Central, we're primarily a run offense, so not a lot of pass blocking."
Nevertheless, Edwards received good feedback from the Spartan coaches.
"They were just always commenting on technique and everything I was doing and they were impressed and hoping to see me there again next year after practicing everything they taught us."
Edwards says he has not heard from any other schools yet. With the talent on Catholic Central's roster, there is no doubt that if he performs well, his recruitment will take off this year.
For now though, he says the focus is not on recruiting, but getting ready to perform in whatever role the team needs him to.
"I know that I'll be primarily on the offensive line, right guard or right tackle."
