Chicago Defender Has an Offer
Looking for a sleeper in the Midwest? Chicago Kenwood's Phillip Martin fits the profile. The school is not famous for pumping out college recurits, but Martin is aiming to change that with his aggressive play in a 6'4, 264-lb frame. "The schools that have offered me so far are Toledo, and I've been getting interest from Northwestern and Northern Illinois," he said. That first offer was unexpected, but certainly welcomed by Martin. "I was surprised because it's so hard and we've been working hard, but it finally paid off. Someone's noticing all the sweat, pain, blood, and I can turn the grimaces into smiles now and it's even more motivation." Martin has taken the time to get to Toledo and camp with the Rockets. He had positive things to say about the school, academics and coaching staff. "I got a chance to see school when I went to their camp. It's pretty nice. The surrounding areas around the campus are nice and they have a nice engineering program, so if I decide to pursue that, it's a good plus. The coaches have a lot of energy and I was thinking about. I looked at their record and they were second in the MAC last year. It's a winning energy and it's contagious. It was the same thing at NIU. The teams that win, it's fun to be at their camp. The coaches attitudes are different because they're winning programs." Will Martin get a Big Ten offer? Well that depends on how next week's camp at Northwestern goes. "Their camp is on the 27th. I'm going up to that one for sure. They said come out to the camp and we'll evaluate you and tell you if we'll offer you from there." Last season, Martin had 40 tackles, ten sacks, three forced fumbles and a pass deflection.
