Pipkins Dishes on Michigan Commitment
Ondre Pipkins made an already strong 2012 class for Michigan even stronger recently when the four-star defensive tackle announced his decision to play for coach Brady Hoke and the Wolverines. He comes in at a position of need, and early playing time may be there, but he says none of those factors were as important as the academic piece. "The education part of it. I believe that it will help me in the long run as far as the internship process that they put me in. Not only that, but the coaching staff has three defensive line coaches on the staff, so I know that I'll be at a higher standard and I'll be coached the right way. I feel like the coaching staff is putting together a great recruiting class and they're going to put Michigan back where they need to be." Pipkins plans to major in communications and business administration. Of course, football is part of it too, and he knows he has a chance to see the field early in his career, but he knows it will not he handed to him. "That's something that's earned. That's not something that's given. That is something I have to come in and earn." When he told the Wolverines, Pipkins says they were ecstatic and told him he is a key cog in making their defense stronger right up the middle. Just as happy as the coaches, however, is his father, Al Pipkins, a Saginaw native who gets to have his son back closer to him. "Oh man, he's happy. He's very happy. I feel like me going back home will be the right thing. My support system will be there. He's excited right now. Words can't explain how excited he is to have his son at home." Pipkins says he does not know when he will be back in Ann Arbor for a game, but is certain that he will take an official visit there. When he is, he can see a full Michigan Stadium for the first time. He says he has already thought about what it will be like to run out onto the field next fall as part of the team. "It's going to be crazy. It's going to be awesome. Words can't explain how excited I am to run out of that tunnel and have everyone cheering and yelling 'Go Wolverines.'"
