Ekanem Elaborates on His List
Only nine schools remain in the running for Centreville (VA) 2012 prospect Ken Ekanem. "My top nine schools are Michigan State, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Oregon and Notre Dame," Ekanem announced yesterday to Scout.com. Ekanem, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound defensive end, has dozens of schools vying for his services, which made his trimming all the more difficult. "I haven't really been to visit anywhere except UNC, so it has been hard to remove and narrow down everything. I chose the ones that interest me most right now for many reasons. But there is still a lot more I need to find out." He breaks down his thoughts on each (in no particular order): MSU - Michigan State is a good program. They are Big 10 champs, and I like that. They also are a good school academically. It's likely I will take a visit there. BC- They were my first offer. It was between them and Michigan for my top nine, and I just felt more comfortable with Boston College. Michigan signed three defensive ends already. While BC, they are really into me and send me mail all the time, and I am really close with Coach Siravo. VT- I like the concept of family over there. The team is really close and that is important. The school is great as well. U.Va - Their football program is rising, and it is a great school. I like that they are securing big prospects, and their new coaching staff. They will be really good in two years. UNC- I am a bit concerned with what's going on there, but I really liked it when I visited. I liked Coach Davis as a person, and he is known for putting guys into the NfL, so it all depends on who the new coach is and how they do this year. NC State -That was my latest offer, and I want to find out more about them. I like their defensive line coach Willis and his coaching style . Pittsburgh - I would say they would use me the most in a 3-4 defense, which is ideal for me. They also said I could get some early playing time, but I need to find out more about them. Oregon - Of course, they went to the national championship and play in the Pac 12 which is cool, and Jim Kelly is a really good coach. Notre Dame - They had a good recruiting class, and they have one linebacker in their 3-4 defense, so I could play the opposite side of him. Ekanem has yet to set any official visit dates. When it comes to the schools that require a plane ticket to visit, he says there are two he absolutely must see. "Oregon and Notre Dame. I have to visit them. I heard great things about them, and about the feeling people get when they visit there. I want to check that out." "I don't expect to narrow down my official visit list until halfway through the season, and I plan on making my decision before National Signing Day."
