A few highly regarded seniors opened their seasons last night as North Central took on Indianapolis Pike, but it was a couple of underclassmen that caught our eye.

RECAP

North Central pulled off a 21-14 upset, as a late touchdown followed by a 4th down stop when Pike was in scoring position sealed the victory.

North Central

  • Jordan Williams - Sr. - WR
Good all around athlete in a 6'4, 200-lb frame. Went up and grabbed a touchdown over Kentucky commit Jon Reed in a key play late in the 4th quarter and also had success twice on reverses. Good open field runner with a solid burst for his size. Had a couple of tough, but catchable balls get away from him. Overall, would like to see him be a little more physical and aggressive, but I really like his tools. He has a Ball State offer.

  • Michael Raby - Sr. - TE
Had two catches on the night, one where he showed his toughness over the middle and pulled it in despite heavy traffic. Thicker kid who did well as a blocker. Looked like an H-Back type you can bring into the backfield. Committed to Ball State.

  • Darius Latham - Jr. - DE
Nice looking prospect at 6'5, 285-lbs. Plays on the edge, but is likely headed for the interior in college. Had an okay first half, and an excellent second half. Athletic and light on his feet, but not an edge guy. Shows decent motor, and made a couple plays in pursuit. Plays with pretty good pad level, but needs to learn to use his hands more. Has a nice package of tools though, and looks like a BCS level guy.

  • Jalen McIntyre - Soph. - RB
Good runner who doesn't waste a lot of motion and gets going north-south. Has a little burst and got outside a little, but not a blazer. Patient runner with good vision. Doesn't look like a home run hitter at the moment, but a good young back worth watching over the next few years.

  • Jeff Harris - Soph. - LB
I like this one. He made several great open field tackles and showed a good head for the game, making nice reads, including blowing up a screen pass for a key 4th down stop late in the game. Listed at 6'1, 210-lbs, he did not look quite that big to me. Filling out over the next couple years will be key, but the kid can play.

  • Krayshawn Brewer - Sr. - WR
Had two touchdown catches, both on fairly long routes. Not a blazer, but a glider who got on top of the defenders twice. Tracks the ball well and has good hands. At 6'0, 170-lbs, he's on the skinnier side. He'll play somewhere though.

  • Joel Williams - Soph. - OT
Nice sized young guy at 6'3, 280-lbs. Played left tackle most of the night and had a solid showing. Would like to see him be more aggressive and play to the whistle. Likely a guard in college if he stays around this size.

    OTHERS
Three defensive backs had solid nights. Kevin Kelly is aggressive and good in run support. He's an in the box type safety. Melvin Graham had an interception on a nice play and covered well all night. Korey Rogan has good length and although he gave up some short completions, he made up for it with a pick. He's physical and got flagged for interference once. All three, I believe, can play on Saturdays at smaller levels.

    Indianapolis Pike

  • Aloyis Gray - Sr. - QB
This was his debut at quarterback for Pike, having played receiver last year. He had a slow start, but came on in the second half. He threw the ball well short, but hung them up a little bit deep. He had one great pass where he really zipped it in to a receiver on a deep comeback; would like to see him do that more. As a runner, he was contained well by the Panther defense. He's not super fast, but has some wiggle to his game. A good leader who lead his team back late to put them in position to win. I still believe his best college position is as a wide receiver, but I thought he improved at quarterback between when I saw him last and now.

  • Jonathan Reed - Sr. - CB
I thought he had a very good game. He was matched up with Williams for the entirety of the game, and other than the late touchdown, had good coverage with him all night. He also came up aggressively and made a couple nice tackles. The TD he gave up, he was on his man, but simply got outjumped by a taller receiver. That may happen in college, because he's not a big guy, but he has really good cover skills.

  • Pierre Aka - Sr. - OT
Recruited as a tight end, he played offensive tackle tonight and played well. He's a good blocker with nice feet and good strength. He's not going to be a tackle in college, but blocking tight end or even guard may be possibilities. His main issue is that lack of a true position, but I was impressed with his toughness and willingness to play offensive line despite playing tight end last year.

  • David Kenney - Jr. - DT
Very good young prospect. Has filled out to 255-lbs at 6'3 and may end up inside eventually. Good with his hands, quick off the ball and showed good motor in pursuit. Made several nice open field tackles after chasing, and had a sack on the night along with numerous times where he forced the action due to penetration. A BCS level guy in my opinion.

  • Dominique Booth - Soph. - WR
Nice sized (6'0, 190) young receiver who caught the ball. Would like to see him get a little faster over the next couple years, but a good prospect.

  • Derrick Wilkerson - Soph - RB
Shifty back who can make people miss and catches the ball well out of the backfield. Not big at 5'8, 175-lbs, but a good runner who has some "it" to him.

    OTHERS
Senior receiver Ray Beverly should end up playing somewhere. He had a lot of catches tonight. He runs good routes and caught it consistently. Sophomore defensive tackle Marcus Johnson is a 6'1, 290-lb youngster who did some nice things and got good penetration. Donovan Phillips and Tate Spence are two sophomore linebackers who started and played well. Both are undersized currently, but are good football players. Safety Taylor Sanders is another sophomore who played a lot and showed good skills. A freshman receiver, Montel Swanson, did not play much, but was identified by the staff as a future prospect. He's 6'3, 180-lbs already.
