Nelson Adams says he has wanted to play for Mississippi State for quite some time. The Brandon…
The Breakdown: Nelson Adams
Brandon High began the Brad Peterson era last fall and they played like a team in transition early on. About midway through the season, things began to click and the Bulldogs put together a second half surge that included a first round playoff win. Brandon ended the season 7-6 after a loss to Oak Grove in a bit of a revenge game for the Warriors. The Bulldogs were the talk of the Magnolia State a few weeks earlier when they upset Oak Grove. Nelson Adams put together a solid season in 2010 totaling 55 tackles, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumbler recoveries, one interception and a field goal block. Adams' 14 quarterback captures were good for seventh best in the entire state of Mississippi regardless of classification. Controlling the edge was a big part of Nelson's responsibilities last year as a defensive end. Playing outside the offensive tackle also gave Adams a clear path to the quarterback in some instances. While Nelson will likely slide inside and play defensive tackle on the next level, he will man the middle as a mike linebacker this fall. Adams has great length and his impressive wingspan makes him tough to handle for offensive linemen. He is strong enough to fight through blocks and get into the backfield. When he is unable to shed his man, he has the ability to get a hand up and shut down a passing window. Nelson is going to be able to carry some additional weight and with his frame that weight should be pretty well distributed which well help him maintain his speed and quickness.
