Focus 2013: Brandon Godfrey
"I started last year at center," said Brandon Godfrey. I played the state championship game at 220 pounds, and I've gained 45 pounds since then. At Alabama's camp, I measured at 6-foot-3 and 1/2. The doctor measured me at 6-foot-4 and 1/4, so I'm a legit 6-foot-4. "I was mentally ready as a sophomore but not quite physically ready. My brother (Jerry Godfrey) is our offensive line coach. He played at Tulane and wants me to be better than he was. He spends a good amount of time teaching me both on and off the field." Godfrey and the Patriots are hungry for a state title after finishing as the runner-up to Evangel Christian (Shreveport) in each of the past two years. "We have a young team this year," he said. "We have three new starters on the offensive line and a new quarterback. We're ready to compete, starting Friday against Covington. Our defense looks really good. Our offense is going to try to carry the load more this season - so we can give the defense a break. "Our running backs - Tevin Horton, Sherman Badie, Brandon Porter and Raekwon James - can do it all. They're an elite group that should be really good. They can catch passes, score touchdowns and hold their ground blocking." Which college programs does Godfrey favor? "I gotta go with Tulane," he said. "I could leave the city, but I like it here in New Orleans. They're coming on strong at Tulane, and I'd like to be a part of that. I also like SMU. When we played Trinity (Euless, Tx.) a few years ago, we visited SMU's campus; it's really nice. I also like Southern Miss. "I think I project as either a center or guard in college."
