Dowrey, PSU Commit, Cheers from Afar
For Derek Dowrey, an under-the-radar 6'3", 295-pound beast, Penn State had always been his dream school. And when he received an offer from the Nittany Lions following their senior summer camp, he immediately said yes. "Coach Johnson said I was good enough to get a scholarship, and he offered me right then, and I committed then." Dowrey chose the Nittany Lions over offers from West Virginia, Ohio, East Carolina, Marshall and Richmond. "I went to a summer camp there as a junior and just loved everything about it." Since, he has been to Happy Valley twice - for senior summer camp when he received his offer and last weekend as PSU played host to Indiana State for the home-opener. "I was there last weekend. I watched the game but didn't meet with the coaches because it was a quick trip. I hadn't been there since summer, so it was great to get back." As recruits pile into Beaver Stadium for the marquee game against Alabama today, Dowrey, unfortunately, will have to cheer from afar. "I was hoping to go, but I have a big game," said Dowrey as Handley (VA) hosts Martinsburg (WV) at 1 P.M. today. Handley has made it to State Semis the last two years in a row. With his eyes on that state title, an official visit to Happy Valley this season appears unrealistic for the defensive standout who collected 145 tackles last season alone. Their games are played every Saturday due to the fact that their stadium does not have lights. "I want to go but I also want to win the state title this year." In the meantime, Dowrey stays in contact with the PSU coaching staff. "I have been talking with coach [Bill] Kenney, my recruiter. He calls me once a week, and we talked on the phone after the game last week." "And, I am still getting letters from Penn State coaches just checking in on me, which is really cool." As far as his communication with other programs? "I might be getting a letter now and then, but I am not still being recruited. I just say I have made my choice, and I am appreciative of them taking the time to recruit me, and it means a lot to me for coaches to recruit me, but I am confident in my decision." "Go Penn State." Well, PSU fans...it is safe to say Dowrey is a Nittany Lion all the way. Stay on Scout.com for the latest on Handley's defensive tackle.
