Fresh Start

Fresh Start

The 6' 3", 210-pound reverse transfer out of Arkansas is already making his mark on N' West CC's team as he was named the NJCAA Special Team's Player of the Week against Pearl River when he brought back a kickoff for a 89 yard touchdown and a punt for another 85 yard score in their wild 56-55 victory.

"That was a fun game for sure," Lance Ray recalled. "It was probably the most fun I have ever had in a game. It just went back and forth until we finally came out on top in the end."

Lance has chipped at receiver too as he has 12 catches for 304 yards and 5 TD's in their 2-1 start.

"I had 3 catches for 70 yards and 1 TD against East Central and five catches for 90 yards and 2 TD's against East MS CC. We lost by three. It went back and forth but we ended up losing 48-45. The Pearl River CC game I had 4 catches for 154 yards and 2 TD's. That game got my name back out."

Lance took a redshirt his freshman season at Arkansas and then averaged over 20 snaps a game his redshirt freshman season. The coach who recruited Lance to Arkansas for the Razorbacks, Paul Petrino, left to coach at Illinois. That spring Lance had an off-the-field incident that led to him wanting a fresh start.

"I was playing a lot at Arkansas. I was getting over 30 reps a game but I was not involved in their game plan. I was not getting a chance to catch the ball. I did have over 30 kick-off returns that season but I wanted to be more involved in the offense. Now that I am at N' West CC I am getting to polish my skills and exorcize my knowledge of the game at the wide receiver position. It was not a challenge to become the focal point here because I felt like I already the knowledge to become one. I just had to shake off the rust so to speak."

Several schools have taken notice of Lance's season.

"I have been in contact with a lot of staffs lately. I got offers from MTSU and Troy, and I have been talking back and forth with Ole Miss a lot lately. They have not offered me yet but they are talking to me a lot."

What is Ole Miss saying?

"They just told me that my name has been popping up a lot lately and they came to check out my game against East Central CC. They have not really said what they are going to do yet. We just have been talking and getting to know one another. They wanted to know what happened at Arkansas and why I left and all of that."

What is the former Havana, FL., resident looking for the second time around?

"I just want an opportunity to play. I am a juco player so I only have two years left. I just want a great opportunity to be involved in the game plan. That's really it. I would like to get a chance to return some kicks too but if the opportunity is good enough at receiver that is not too important."

Getting back to the SEC is not a must either.

"It would be nice, but I understand now with my experience at Arkansas that it does not take playing in the SEC to get to the league. It is not about the conference you play in but rather the offense you play in. You just have to have an opportunity to show your skills. It's that time for me to showcase my skills in college again, and I plan to make the most of my opportunity this time around."

Is there a school out there that is not recruiting Ray that he would like to start recruiting him?

"I have interest in Oklahoma State because of how they use their receivers. They get the ball in their hands pretty good. They have had a lot of good receivers to come out of their lately. I have some interest in them but I also have interest in a couple more spread offensive teams."
