When Coach Les Miles and the LSU Tigers extended an offer to East Jefferson defensive back Derrick…
Raymond Readies for Tiger Future
Derrick Raymond profile "The season is going okay," said Derrick. "We still need to come together as a team and get better as a team. "Once we do that, I feel like we can execute better on the field. "We just need to get everybody on the same page." Opponents are accounting for Derrick in their game plans and pre-snap reads. Raymond is seeing some action on his side of the field, but by and large opposing quarterbacks are looking for softer targets. "The season just started, but the last couple of games I have seen a lot of that," said Raymond. "I am just trying to win and make plays for the team." Derrick did his part to help the team on Friday night. He opened the East Jefferson scoring with an impressive kickoff return for a touchdown. "We had a middle return called," said Raymond. "I just saw the crease and I took off." Taking off is putting it mildly. Later in the contest, Derrick ran down a Belle Chasse receiver from behind despite being twenty plus yards behind the play. "I just didn't want to give up on the play," said the humble Raymond. "I just did the best I could to catch him and it worked out." Next fall, Derrick will make the move from Jefferson Parish to East Baton Rouge Parish as a member of the LSU football team. Raymond is more than happy to talk about how well his Tigers are playing. "The Tigers are a great team offensively and defensively," explained Derrick. "They lost a couple of people, but they're still doing good. "I talk to one of the coaches about once a week. I talk to Coach Frank (Wilson) the most. "We have a good relationship. I feel like I can talk to him about anything." Raymond also reports that he is looking forward to being a part of Coach Ron Cooper's secondary. "I could play corner or safety, but I am probably going to play corner," said Derrick. "Coach Cooper is a good coach. He teaches very well. "He told me he liked my size and speed and that he felt I was a player that could help them."
