Week 6: Spotlight
Hanceville got a stellar performance from running back Diamond Simmons, who gained 175 yards on 18 rush attempts and scored four touchdowns. Fullback Sheldon Lewis added 124 yards on nine carries with an 82-yard touchdown run.
The last time Hanceville started a season with a 6-0 record was in 1987 when it finished with a 10-2 mark, losing to Tarrant in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. With the win, Coach Danny Miller's team improved to 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 5 by outscoring opponents 254-48. Miller is now 14-12 since becoming head coach in 2009. The Bulldogs were just 4-36 in the four previous seasons (2005-2008).
Cordova had won 20 straight home games since losing to Class 5A Hartselle 42-27 Sept. 26, 2008, and had a stretch from 2007-2011 of winning 30 of 31 games played at home. During that span Cordova won one Class 3A state championship (2007), finished second twice (2008 and 2009) and compiled an overall 62-13 record. In the 20 straight home wins, Cordova averaged 41.5 points per game while giving up 18.4.
Cordova also hadn't lost a regular-season game to a 3A team since a setback to Greene County two weeks after the Hartselle loss in 2008. The last home loss to a 3A team came in the second round of the 2006 playoffs to Montgomery Academy.
