On Monday, Arizona head coach, Mike Stoops was fired by athletic director Greg Byrnes.
Scout.com caught up with Arizona commit, Julian Brooks, the three-star wide receiver at Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon, to find out how the move affected his commitment to Arizona.
“I heard it was coming, but their coaching staff said not to listen to it. I knew he was one questionable loss away from getting fired. I don’t know where I stand with my offer? I think the new coaching staff has to reevaluate all offers, and can then decide if those offers are still valid,” said Brooks.
Brooks said he had a close relationship with the coaching staff, and is confused as to why he hasn’t heard from them yet, especially since he is now aggressively hearing from several other programs, ever since the news broke on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am just surprised I still haven’t heard anything from the coaching staff yet, especially since I had a really good relationship with Coach Stoops, and the other coaches who were recruiting me: Robert Anae and especially Dave Nichol.”
“Once the news broke, a bunch of schools automatically started contacting me. The schools I have been hearing from and have stayed in contact with are, Nevada, UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon State, USC and Utah State,” said Brooks.
It was widely known that Coach Stoops has a reputation of having a strong emotional presence on the football field, however this characteristic didn’t seem to deter Brooks from their program.
“I have meet Coach Stoops in person, I always really liked him, and I felt we had a close relationship. When meeting him in person, I thought he was kind of jittery, but I never witnessed anything in person, but I have seen him get emotional on TV. But that never bothered me, I think every good coach is going to coach how their going to coach, and everyone has their own style of coaching,” said Brooks.
Although Coach Stoops may have led his team to a losing record this season, he appears to have done a good job at pulling in some solid recruits; even Brooks seemed to think so.
“It has been said that Arizona had one of the best recruiting classes this year, so I am not sure why they would make the choice to fire Coach Stoops in the middle of the season, leaving everything unsettled for the guys that have already committed,” said Brooks.
Brooks is planning on reaching out to fellow Arizona commit, Modesto (Calif.) Modesto Christian quarterback, Nathan Sudfeld.
“After I committed to Arizona, I connected with another Arizona commit Nathan Sudfeld. We had talked about the possibly of rooming together our freshman year. I am planning on reaching out to him, to see if he has heard anything or if he knows what he is going to do,” said Brooks.
