Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla. is currently ranked No. 4 in Scout's Top 50 including a win over No. 9 Bishop Gorman without workhorse running back Matt Jones (6'3/225) who is committed to the Florida Gators.
Jones is healthy again and that was bad news for Hillsborough who was visiting Armwood on Thursday night. Jones was worked into the rotation cautiously as he only had one touch on the first series, but after being forced to punt, Jones got the ball on five straight carries and the Hawks found the endzone.
Jones is an extremely skilled big athlete with quick feet and good balance, but as a running back on the college level, he won't be able to make many players miss. He has adapted and embraced his role as a senior as the big back. He ran with power and determination; lowering his shoulder and punishing would-be defenders rather than try and make them miss.
Jones helped lead his team to a 38-16 win in the district matchup. Armwood's defense had an impressive streak on defense. The hawks had gone 24 consecutive quarters without surrendering a score on defense. Hillsborough broke the streak in the 4th quarter after a long kickoff return and a penalty gave them the ball on the Armwood 13. Armwood's defense answered with two interception returns for touchdowns to close out the game.
On offense though, the key is Matt Jones and the running game, and here is a look at him in action courtesy of ScoutTV.
