Canon Smith talks visit
"I went down to Southern Miss this past weekend," said Canon Smith. "They had a great atmosphere down there for the SMU game. They had a large attendance for Homecoming. "They had a slow start. They cranked it up though. They looked good on offense and defense. I was there with one of my teammates, Kalan Reed, who is committed. "I talked to several of the coaches. They really like me. They are going to recruit me. They are going to see how everything works outs." The Golden Eagles have recruited the state of Alabama very well, and Smith also has interest in the program. "Southern Miss is a great school," he said. "It's a D-I program. I didn't think it was going to be like it was. It's something once you get there. They have nice facilities. You wouldn't think it would be as conservative as it was. It was a great visit." Smith has been invited to participate for the 2012 U.S. Under-19 National Team for USA Football. The team will compete February 1st in the third annual International Bowl. The team will face an All-World Team of top players age 19-and under from outside the U.S. "It's an honor and everything. It's great to be able to get after it and compete," said Smith. "They announced it today. They asked me to withhold the information. I have known for about a month and a half. "They had a couple of trials. Last year they had the first stage of trials at Westlake High School. We got to see the teams compete and practice last year. I did very well at the practice. "I was interviewed as one of the top four there. I got after it. I dominated the first trial. At the time I practiced I did defensive end. I will play tight end for them." Smith will take his third unofficial visit to Middle Tennessee this weekend. Briarwood Christian travels to Anniston Friday night for the last regular season game. They will host Athens next week in the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs.
