Dieter picks up offer from Kansas
It would be difficult to find a wide receiver in the prep ranks more productive than Gehrig Dieter. Scratch that. It would be borderline impossible. By Sep. 2, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior standout from South Bend (IN) Washington High had already shattered the 1,000 yard mark on the season, following three straight games in which he tallied more than 300 yards through the air. No, that's not a typo. And on Sept. 2, he set a national record for receiving yards in a game with 447. Those are Madden Football numbers, folks. It's video game stuff. Dieter finished the season with 82 receptions for 2,181 yards - an absurd 26.6 yards per reception average - and 24 touchdowns. Charlie Weis knows Gehrig Dieter. It makes sense, because the recently-named head coach at the University of Kansas helmed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 2005-2009, and the explosive wideout plays in their home town of South Bend. After Weis landed at the University of Florida during prior to the 2011 season, he worked to get Dieter in on an official visit with the Gators. So it should come as no surprise that he was one of Weis' first recruiting calls, shortly after he was introduced in Lawrence, Kan. Though he bears a number of Division One offers already - and recently visited Southern Methodist officially - the offer from Kansas represents his first from a BCS school. However, that's not what makes it special. "It's because it's Coach Weis," Dieter said. "He's a great coach and knows how to run a program. At the same time, Kansas is one of the struggling programs in the NCAA. It's a tough choice, but I think Coach Weis will be able to turn things around." Though he plans to graduate from high school in December and enroll at his chosen college early, Dieter said he planned to try to set up an official visit to Kansas. "(Weis) just extended the offer," Dieter said. "And he told me he was going to call me back sometime soon."
