National Signing Day isn't too far around the corner, but Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School QB…
Mike's Take: Marshall QB commit
What to Like: Gunnar Holcombe is a standout quarterback prospect from the University School in Fort Lauderdale. At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Holcombe brings above average arm strength and athleticism to the position and he has a real good understanding of the game. He's a hard-worker who is also considered a very good teammate. In his first season as starter, Holcombe threw for 2,305 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just seven picks -- making him one of the state's most successful quarterbacks in 2011. He also comes from one of the state's premier prep programs, one that will likely be producing a lot of Division 1 prospects in the coming years. What may concern you: Holcombe brings some decent attributes to the table but he doesn't have top notch size, arm strength, or athleticism. They're all adequate, though. He's never going to be a gun-slinger who can just throw the football all over the field with success. He's more of a game manager who gets the job done. As good as he was on the field this season, his team fell short of expectations of winning the state title and it was only his first season as the starter so he hasn't been doing it very long. Bottom Line: Marshall is getting one of the top quarterback prospects from South Florida. He had Division 1 offers from Buffalo, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan as well so he was recruited like a solid two-star prospect.
