Demetrious Cox took his fourth official visit this weekend to Ohio State University, Scout.com talks…
The End is Near for Cox
Jeannette (Pa.) four-star safety Demetrious Cox has traveled the country checking out schools. He has played host to the who's who of the college coaching world. He has seen the good and bad in recruiting and he is just ready for it to end. Cox was visited by Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Pittsburgh this week. He spoke with Notre Dame via telephone. Cox is also a standout hoops player at Jeannete and while the Jayhawks were playing their big rival Greensburg Central Catholic this week coaches from Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin sat in the bleachers. "It was kind of awkward having them all there," Cox said. "I tried hard not to lose my focus, we lost by three, but I scored 18. It gets tiring though all these coaches come by and you miss practice time and stuff. It's nice to be wanted, but I don't like to take away from my teammates." It was tough, but at the conclusion of the game Cox divided his time with all three sets of coaches. Ohio State took their turn first. "I came out of the locker room and talked to Coach Urban Meyer," he said. "We talked for about 15-20 minutes. We talked mainly just about me taking my official visit this weekend. I want to go up there and see what it is all about and what Coach Meyer and Ohio State has to offer." Wisconsin took their turn next as Chris Ash and Charlie Partridge made their pleas to the four-star prospect. "Coach Ash and the defensive line coach were there," stated Cox. "They said I have a great opportunity at Wisconsin and they would like me to take my last official up there. I talked to them for about ten minutes." The Nittany Lion staff consisting of Ted Roof, Larry Johnson and John Butler waited their turn and had the last discussion of the evening with Cox. "We talked for a good half an hour," Cox said of his discussion with Penn State. "They asked how I felt my official visit went. They said the players felt that I fit in well with them, like I was already one of them. They talked a little bit about how they will approach the season and they feel that I could come in there and be a leader." On Wednesday, Cox hosted the Michigan State staff consisting of Mark Dantonio, Mark Staten, Pat Narduzzi and Harlon Barnett. "My in-home with them went real well," Cox said. "They talked to my grandma for a while. Mainly just telling me how I fit in with what their trying to up there. Their staff has been really stable, so I have built a good relationship with them." On Thursday, Pittsburgh took their turn trying to make an impression on the local product. "Coach (Dave) Huxtable and (Matt) House were here," he said. "I had a pretty good vibe with them. It's so hard, because they were hired so late. They really sounded confident that they can turn things around there and get the program going in the right direction. Coach (Paul) Chryst is supposed to come in for an in-home next week." Cox is thankful that he is in this position, but happy that it will end soon. "I'm so ready for signing day to come," Cox stated. "With all these visits and everything, I never get a weekend to do anything. It interrupts basketball all the time. I have seen and experienced a lot of things that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise." The Westmoreland County native recently returned from Arizona, where he played in the inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Game. He has had a chance to build a lot of relationships with a lot of recruits. Recruits always try to recruit each other and Cox has experienced his share. "In the beginning of the process I thought a lot about the other recruits and who as going where," he explained. I thought about going somewhere with a bunch of good players and building this real special class, but now I just want to go somewhere where I'm going to win." Cox is currently on his official visit to Ohio State. He has one more trip and three schools in contention for it. "It's either going to be Pitt, Notre Dame or Wisconsin," said Cox. "I'll probably narrow it down to a top three before signing day."
