WR Smith Set with SunDevils
When coaching changes hit the Arizona State staff a few months ago, Long Beach Poly (CA) wide receiver Richard Smith had opened up his options. Now, immediately after taking his official visit to Tempe, Smith has solidified his commitment to the Sun Devils. "It was great, it was phenomenal," he said of the weekend. "When I first got there we went out to eat and then I hung out with my host (safety Alden Darby) and we went out, met the football players. There was just a whole lot of stuff we did." Smith, who was one of five JackRabbits taking his official, enjoyed spending time with Darby, as both grew up in the same area. "He's really cool. We connected that way, were just talking about the coaching staff. He was honest with me, he told me what was different from last year's staff, so that was really good." Possibly the biggest question mark throughout his whole courtship with ASU was the new staff, and Smith left Tempe pleased. "The new staff, I liked them a lot. They were really promising and just honest. They seem more determined than the last staff was to achieve goals, more about winning and about the players." Smith was also able to discuss with the coaches how they plan on using him on the field. "They actually had a clip for me to watch; they said with my speed, they were trying to get me on one-on-ones and matches with the DBs, they like my speed, so that's good." What was it like to finally be in Tempe with his teammates (Matthew Rowe, Salamo Fiso, Randall Goforth, and Josiah Blandin)? "It was really fun. All week in school, we had been looking forward to going on the visit and we did it and we had so much fun." As far as other universities that have been in the picture are concerned, Smith is off the market and happy about that decision. Though he had once shown interest in UCLA and was originally planning on taking an official visit to Oregon State this weekend, Smith has canceled those plans. "I'm sticking to ASU. I know I have an opportunity there, so I'm sticking with ASU," he confirmed.
