Whitehurst: ‘Rutgers is in Second Place'
Gainesville (FL) linebacker Tashon Whitehurst re-iterated his "soft" verbal pledge to Syracuse on Friday, one day after Rutgers lost coach Greg Schiano to the NFL. But the race is far from over. Whitehurst says South Florida remains in the mix along with Syracuse, and Rutgers is still being considered depending on what moves are made on the staff. "It kind of does change things just a little bit because of the Head Coach," Whitehurst said of his reaction. "He was a defensive-style coach, so it's kind of hard to feel like Rutgers as much as I did before." "He was there for 11 years, and he was a smart guy, "said Whitehurst of Schiano. "He had a nice home, nice family right down the street from the school so it kind of is a big change. " The trio of schools remain in the race for his services despite the late shake-up. "Rutgers is in second place because Syracuse and USF are in first," said Whitehurst. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect has a plan on how he is to consider Rutgers going forward in light of all that has happened. "I'm going to talk to the [Rutgers] coaches this weekend, then come out and make my decision on signing day," he revealed. "Once I talk to the coaches, see what's up with the head coaching job… but other than that I'm going to make my decision by then because I would have narrowed it down. " If Rutgers does not hire a coach before Signing Day? "Most likely they'll be out, "said Whitehurst. Rutgers does plan on moving quickly with the hiring process, though there remains to be questions with the assistants on staff. Two of them were at Gainesville High School on Thursday to check in on Whitehurst before the Schiano news broke. "Coach [Chris] Hewitt and Coach [Robb] Smith were at my school, but I didn't get to talk to any of the coaches because I was in class taking a test," said Whitehurst. "They talked to [Gainesville] Coach [James] Thompson and he told me. Then they kind of went back. " Stay on FOXSportsNext.com and Scout.com for the latest on his recruitment leading up to Wednesday.
