SMU will host its final--and most critical--set of official visitors this weekend, just days before…
Declouet's a Dawg
"I just felt comfortable with the coaches at Louisiana Tech," said Jaydrick Declouet. "They've been recruiting me since I was committed to Vanderbilt (several months ago) and Houston. "I felt the same way with the coaches at Houston as Louisiana Tech, but Ruston is a small town like Patterson, and I felt comfortable with my decision." Declouet had an official visit scheduled to SMU for last weekend but he stayed home instead. He's also a prankster. "Jaydrick is quiet," said Patterson head coach Tommy Minton. "When you look at him, he's got a good sense of humor. He's a practical joker and he's so sneaky-quiet about it. He brings a lot of levity to the locker room. "He's super-quick. He's not the biggest kid out there at 5-foot-9 1/2 to 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, but he played outside receiver for us. He's going to be a slot receiver at Louisiana Tech." Declouet spurned offers from several BCS programs. "He turned down Big Ten schools," said Minton. "Illinois and Purdue came in hard at the end. He was committed at one point to Vanderbilt. Mississippi State came hard. "All these guys came hard for him at the end, and I think what won out is that he didn't want to end up in a big city. Louisiana Tech was small enough that he felt comfortable there. He didn't want to get swallowed up in a big city environment." Minton expressed appreciation for Louisiana Tech recruiter Pierre Ingram, who was assigned to Declouet. "Pierre did a great job of recruiting Jaydrick," said Minton. "He built a good relationship with Jaydrick, and I'm going to tell you: I kept a log and we had 58 schools come through here from the first day of spring practice to today, and he's one of the coaches that I really, really like. "I think he's a real up-and-coming coach, and he did a great job of recruiting Jaydrick." Declouet was a two-time all-state selection at Patterson, which is a perennial football powerhouse. He hauled in an impressive 131 career receptions for 2,182 yards and 29 touchdowns. He's also a standout baseball player.
