Beauford Brings the Pain
John Curtis Christian cruised to a perfect 14-0 season in 2011 behind the strength of a powerful ground game and a stingy defense. Most of the key defensive players were underclassmen, including junior LB Fred Beauford. "I had a real good season and I'm looking forward to an even better season next year," said Beauford (6-1, 215). "I gained a lot of experience." Beauford gets it done in the weight room. "My bench press is 360 to 365 pounds, and I'm squatting 445," he said. Two of the junior's best games were in crucial contests. He notched 12 tackles in the Patriots' 27-7 early-season win over Class 5A Westgate, which had reached the semifinals the previous year. Moreover, Beauford recorded 10 tackles and a sack in a 38-6 win over Evangel Christian in the Class 2A semis. That win was especially sweet for the Patriots, who had lost to Evangel in the state finals two years in a row. "That game (Evangel) was personal, because we had something to prove," said Beauford. Which schools interest the junior? "UL (Ragin' Cajuns) is the main one," he said. "They're up and coming, a rising team and I like their head coach, Mark Hudspeth." Beauford is also interested in South Alabama, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, ULM and Southern Miss. "Everybody is liking what they're doing at Tulane," he said of the Green Wave, who signed a nice recruiting class under new head coach Curtis Johnson. "They got Darion Monroe (East St. John CB who was committed to Texas A&M before flipping to Tulane) and are coming up."
