Recruiting Spotlight - Marquin Russell

Marquin Russell (Scout.com)

Scout.com spoke recently with Marquin Russell, a 6-foot, 185-pound athlete from Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash., and while Russell is a very good football player, he's known in the state of Washington for his ability on the oval. Russell is the returning 3A 400 meters champ, and he is hoping to take his two-sport talents with him to the next level.

"I definitely want to do both (sports) in college," Russell told Scout.com. He's already shaved a couple of tenths off his winning 400m time of 49 seconds flat, and his personal record in the 200m is 22 seconds.

When it comes to football, Russell caught 10 passes for 322 yards and five touchdowns on offense, and on defense had an impressive pick-six in the Lancers' rout of Decatur. He was a second-team All-League selection as a junior on both sides of the ball.

In recruiting, UCLA, Washington State and Utah have already been in touch with Russell. He was supposed to make it to a WSU Junior Day at the end of February, but a lot of snow put a wrench in those plans.

During the spring, he will be defending his state track title, and he'll also be trying out for the Junior Olympics and taking part in meets like the Simplot meet in Idaho and the Pasco Invite in the Tri-Cities.

At the same time he's trying to fit in as much football as possible. He'll be joining teammate Sammie Long at the Badger Elite 7-on-7 Tournament in Las Vegas at the end of March.
