FOX Sports Next is in the streets bringing you all of the coverage. We recently took in some action at the NLA Combine in Houston. Lots of good play was going on and here are a few notes to highlight some of the action…

McCarley Slinging’ It
It was a pretty good day out for Manvel quarterback Shane McCarley. Watching him go through a number of throws, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect showed once again that he is a legitimate player for the college ranks. Though still no offers in hand, McCarley is scheduled to do a two-day tour to Arizona for the spring game next month on April 13-14. Rice, La Tech and Houston are just a couple of the schools that have invited him for junior days. He also has a laundry list of camp invites of programs that want him to come by for one-day camps including Notre Dame, Duke and Memphis

Lee Has Versatility
He’s played on both sides of the trenches, but it seems as though Missouri City Marshall’s Anthony Lee may get his shot on the big stage as a defensive interior lineman. The 6-foot-2, 299-pound Lee moved well during drills and is still awaiting that first offer. But he does have a couple of schools looking his way with Tulsa and Iowa interested.

Ready for Change
After playing in HISD with the Lamar program, wide receiver Kyrion Parker will be out Highway 6 next year with the Class 4A state runner up program at Manvel. Parker said that he was not aware of his numbers from last year. Not surprising as he also said that ‘no’ programs are recruiting him at this time. But if his play continues to get better based on what was seen on the field today, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Parker should have a number of programs coming by this spring. On top of that, Parker looks to get out this summer as well with camp stops to Baylor, SMU and Texas A&M.

4 Stars Showing Out
Many times these combines are attended by players looking to improve their game, but also get some exposure as well. Well, looking at not only the quantity, or the quality, Marshall defensive end Deon Hollins and Dulles’ Maurice Smith clearly do not lack exposure and plenty of the top Division I programs are well aware of both of them. Sometimes, it’s just the matter of wanting to get out and play ball.

“I just wanted to come out here and compete,” Smith said.

And he did that in a dominating fashion. There were not many times that passes were caught while he was in coverage. It was clear why Alabama, Notre Dame and Nebraska and a dozen other college programs want to get the No. 6 rated, four-star cornerback on the roster for 2013. Hollins, who is well over 30 offers as well, was solid in drills. He worked out with the defensive lineman at this camp, but said that he will probably work with the linebackers at the NIKE Football Training Camp next weekend in Dallas. Depending on program and scheme, college coaches are looking at him for one of those two positions.

Hoping SMU Offers…
Those were the words from not only the athlete, Alief Hastings running back Jaquaries Johnson, but also family who are looking to get that first offer in. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Johnson is set to be in Dallas next week. He also has Stanford, UTEP and Arkansas recruiting him as well.

DBs Making Their Case
Aside from Smith (mentioned above), not many of the defensive backs on hand had been offered. But don’t discount this group as there were plenty playing at the Division I level, staring with the DB Camp MVP Zachry Newman from Marshall. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Newman was aggressive in his play, especially when they went into one-on-one press coverage. He was able to stay in the hip pocket of the receivers and made several breaks on the ball. Overall, he had a solid day. Kansas, Oklahoma State, North Texas (likely offer here) and Kansas State are checking out Newman. Look for an offer to come his way soon…from somewhere.

Others who looked solid:
• Cy Woods S Alfred Pullom (6-1, 185) – Oregon, Texas Tech and Houston are recruiting him.
• Westside CB Hypolito Corporan (6-1, 160) – TCU, Arkansas and Kansas State are in the mix. Also said that LSU came by the school and inquired recently.
• Katy CB Isaiah Brown (5-11, 173) – Despite 56 tackles and four interceptions last season for the Tigers, no programs are giving him a hard look. No worries though, Brown looks to camp at Houston, Rice and Baylor to hopefully see that change.
• Langham Creek CB Jeremy Land (5-10, 165) – Trying to get to Indiana in a couple of weeks, a program showing heavy interest. New Mexico State also recruiting him.
