Just moments ago, Sugar Land (TX) Dulles defensive back Maurice Smith was on the line with Texas coach Mack Brown.
"I was talking with Coach Brown. I got my offer earlier today, but in talking with him it just confirmed it," Smith said. "It's a blessing to get this offer because a lot of DBs (defensive backs) wanted to get one. I'm excited to get this one."
Smith was just in Austin on yesterday and took in the campus and the game. He was able to interact with the coaches and players and that was big not only for him, but also for the Longhorn coaching staff as well.
"The coaches sat down with my family and Antuwan Davis' family. It went well in that the coaches like the way everyone interacted," Smith said. "They like to see you on campus and just see how everyone fits in. The coaches liked our families and our character."
Davis, a defensive back from Bastrop, Texas was also offered today. Now that the school that the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith has been waiting on, what is his timetable to a commitment? Well, that may be at least a little until that happens.
At that is because even though Smith's college campus tour has been extensive, it's not over yet. Unofficially, Smith named programs that are part of his top list: Texas, LSU, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Oklahoma State. He has visited all of the programs listed except for two.
"I was talking with my mom and dad tonight and there are some commitments that we still have. We still have a couple more visits to make," Smith said.
Those programs left on the board are Oklahoma State and Alabama. The original plan was for the Smith family to head to Tuscaloosa for the Tide spring game, but Smith has a track meet that weekend and is not sure how to make it all work out.
So, though the plan is not solidified, an audible may be called.
"We are thinking about visiting both schools that same weekend," Smith said.
Last season, Smith had 63 tackles and three interceptions. Offensively, he scored 13 touchdowns last season.
