The University of Kansas hosted a number of recruits last weekend for one of their first practices of the spring, but only one attended as a commit - Basehor (KS) Linwood tight end Ben Johnson.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Class of 2013 prospect gave his pledge to the Jayhawks in late February, shortly after Head Coach Charlie Weis and his staff extended him a scholarship offer.

Saturday, he got to see the Kansas coaching staff and the team in action.

"I thought it was a pretty good practice," Johnson said. "Things seemed to go right. At times it was a little sloppy, but for the most part - three days into it, it was pretty good."

"You can tell that the environment has changed dramatically," he added. "Coach Weis is a big part of that, getting the guys pumped up."

Ben Johnson and his father spent a portion of the afternoon watching the tight ends work with assistant coach Jeff Blasko.

Observing things through the eyes of a commitment, rather than those of a recruit, offered him a different outlook.

"It gave me a whole different perspective than what the other guys had," Johnson said. "Because I knew those are some of the guys I could be working with in two years. It just made me want to be there more, knowing I'm going to be there in a few years."

Later this month, he will return to to campus for the program's spring game, and then plans to attend a handful of combines during the summer to test himself against other top prospects in the class.
